Taxes on jet fuel: yes or no?

A still unpublished European Commission report has been revealed by the Brussels-based Transport & Environment (T&E), an environmental pressure group.
According to the report, the end of aviation’s tax holiday is near; especially in the EU, where fuel for commercial aircraft is exempt from taxation.
Taxing jet fuel would increase ticket prices, cut the annual number of travellers and reduce the sector’s carbon emissions by 11%. The report did find that the tax would have a negative impact on aviation sector jobs but that its impact on employment and GDP as a whole would be “negligible”.
“This is essential to fight climate change.” says Bill Hemming, aviation director of T&E.
EU finance ministers will meet in The Hague on June 20-21 for a summit on aviation taxation.
