New look for Air India

The Indian flag carrier is making significant modernisations to its Boeing 777 fleet that will be ready from the second half of 2024.
CEO Campbell Wilson unveiled all the new features in advance at a media event on 10th August in a two-minute video. One can see four different cabins divided into first class, business class, premium economy and economy with distinct colours: brown, beige and grey for first and business class and dark red and brown with grey headrests for economy and premium economy.
In first class there will be two seats in the middle row with ample legroom and a partition in the middle that can be raised. In addition to privacy doors and fully reclining seats, the new feature is wireless charging for mobile devices.
An important part of the aircraft is dedicated to the premium seats which will be larger than in economy and also have footrests. The fabric of the economy seats will have small inlays to differentiate them from the premium seats with which they share the colours.
The premium economy class on Air India’s Boeing 777-200LR aircraft features 48 leather-covered memory foam seats that are 19 inches wide, 38 inches in pitch and 5 inches in recline with adjustable leg rests and winged footrests and headrests. The seats offer passengers more legroom to stretch out during the flight, allowing them to rest or work in comfort.
But there’s more: besides the new seats, there will be a new in-flight entertainment system with 1,700 hours of content – the largest of any Indian airline and on par with other global airlines.
Within the next two and a half years, according to Wilson, Air India’s long-haul fleet will be completely revamped, including the latest order aircraft, implemented with all the latest innovations. A huge sum of USD 400 million has been earmarked for this operation.
The livery will also change, focusing on strong colours such as deep red, aubergine and gold, as well as a chakra-inspired motif. And to make itself even more unique, it has created, from scratch, a customised ‘Air India Sans’ font.
In short, the Air India of the future will be a profoundly different company from the current one, and after having ordered hundreds of planes, the time had come to present itself to the world with a new image, fresher and more modern than the current one.
