Ita moving into a green future

While air traffic has increased again after the pandemic, attention must now be paid to carbon dioxide emissions in the skies, which seem to have reached levels at the limit of the permitted pollution threshold.
In this situation, the risk is that governments may restrict short-haul flights in favour of travel by other means of transport. This would put a burden on travellers in terms of air travel options and increased ticket costs.
In this context, Aeroporti di Roma prevents these risks promoting a decarbonisation pact that will involve not only airlines but also aircraft manufacturers, airport management companies, and above all the Italian government and international institutions.
The Politecnico of Milan, which is supporting Aeroporti di Roma with a research, predicts the decarbonisation of flights by 2050 through the expansion of a series of ready-made measures:
– Use of aircraft construction materials that burn less fuel
– Conventional engines but with low consumption and hydrogen or electric motors for short distances only
– Biofuels made from organic or synthetic products
On this last point, Troncone, Managing Director of Aeroporti di Roma, insists that biological materials should always be usable, that their use should be encouraged through incentives, and that the companies producing these fuels should be supported.
There are many things that can be done, such as bringing rail to the airports and avoiding the usage of cars to get to or from the airports.
Another measure would be to use forms of energy supply on the slopes and increase instruments for capturing carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
Ita Airways, under the leadership of Fabio Lazzerini, is aligned with environmental sustainability. The fleet will be renewed with 85 new generation aircraft and the only supplier will be Airbus. This will reduce costs by up to 30% by 2026. And by 2050, total decarbonisation is planned with a net reduction in pollutant emissions.
