New certification method for 16 g multilayer seat cushions

The project has no competitors, as Andrea Scialpi, responsible of the project in Testori Aero Supply, points out: “In 2013, EASA issued to our company, first in Europe, the certification to the alternative method for the homologation of monolithic cushions made using a unique material”. And now the project extends its scope to certificate the homologation of the multilayer cushions.
Testori developed an alternative and innovative method to the common dynamic test, able to test resistance to stress conditions according to the rules related to crash landing simulation (16 g frontal, 14 g vertical). Developed together with the Department of Aerospace Engineering of the Milan Polytechnic, the new cushion testing method uses a hydraulic device, which data are collected in a 3 DOF model that simulates an aeronautic seat and a human body and elaborates forces that are transferred to the vertebral column.
This process is particularly useful for implementing the retrofit of passenger cabins. This method aims to offer more comfortable cushions thanks to the adoption of multilayer foams, while breaking the monopoly of the suppliers that force their clients into purchasing expensive original parts and/or execute new and expensive dynamic tests.
The roots of this innovative project date back to 2014, when the alternative test method was expanded to the certification of the multi-layered cushions, extending the strain computation method based on the current three degrees of freedom model. In 2015 the Testori project was approved within the framework of the EU Horizon 2020 program. At the beginning of 2016, Testori Aero Supply and the EU signed the official agreement that definitively endorsed the certification of the process.
