In the future we will have more connected airplane cabin: overhead luggage bins that illuminate in red when they’re full, an airplane seat tailored to your personal position preferences, seat belts that alert cabin crew when they’re unbuckled and cameras outside restrooms.
Airbus, the European aerospace company, recently announced a new test: Airspace Connected Experience cabin. The connected airplane cabin is the natural extension of ultra-connectivity on the ground. Thanks to connected airplane cabin, Airbus could offer more personalized services to travellers.
This cabin will be grounded in wireless technology, controlled mainly by the crew with portable devices. Passengers will be able to sync up their personal device. When passengers board, they’ll see an OLED Welcome panel, that could provide updates throughout the journey. The connected airplane seat will be pre-programmed with passenger seat reclining preferences, personalized inflight entertainment (IFE) and catering preferences. There will also be sensors that will show if armrest is down and seat belt is buckled.
Cameras on Airbus Connected Experience could have some problems related to privacy. However, the VP of Airbus explained that cameras outside restrooms will not be hidden and will be installed a filter that blurs out of face. The aim is to help redirect foot traffic if there are long lines, and also to monitor how much toilet roll or soap is available on stock and whether it needs a top up.
There are still issues about potential privacy implications of on-board data collection and cameras in cabins. However, airplane cabins are public zone and they should be monitored according to the best public security.
