Innovative dynamic test method for 16g aircraft seat cushions
Added on Wed December 19th, 2018
Airplane seat cushions should be replaced every 4-5 years, to maintain their safety and comfort characteristics. Cushions replacement and safety certification through crash tests are very expensive, risking airlines to often delay their replacement, with the consequence that passenger comfort and even safety can be compromised. Times and costs of replacing 16g certified cushions are nowadays quite high.
Testori Aero Supply has found a way to overcome this deadlock: a new test method, the so called “16gAirTest” project, co-financed within the Horizon2020 SME instrument programme, set out to reduce replacement lead times and costs for both suppliers and end airline customers. The new certification method, developed in cooperation with EASA and the Politecnico di Milano, involves taking the cushion configuration and perform only a dynamic compression test which will allow the avoidance of dynamic crash testing for every cushion replacement, testing the cushion by simulation instead than together with the whole seat.
Method approved by European Aviation Safety Authority (EASA).
