Air traffic: fewer passengers, more cargo
Added on Fri April 9th, 2021
What is the air traffic situation at the beginning of 2021? According to Iata, an association representing almost 90 per cent of airlines, there has been an increase in cargo transport. This increase is due to the rise in ecommerce as a result of business closures.
The opposite situation for passengers: since January, there has been a 72% decrease in passengers compared to January 2019. Overall, demand for domestic flights has fallen by 47.4% compared to pre-pandemic levels.
Cargo, on the other hand, performed better than expected: overall demand, measured in tonne-kilometres, was up for the first time in over a year: +1.1% in January compared to January 2019 and +3% compared to December 2020.
The result is also due to a change of some airlines, which have “sacrificed” passenger aircraft by converting or adapting them as cargo aircraft. This is also positive from an economic perspective. However, cargo alone cannot save airlines from possible suffering in the months to come.
